Well it looks like Brent has taken the plunge. We've been discussing the topic for quite some time now. Well I'm pulling up a partition next to the pool I guess. I'm not ready to dive in but I am getting my feet wet.

I have 4 Win2000 server boxes (one to be retired due to age than anything else) and now 1 Linux box. Actually that makes 2 Linux boxes if you count the co-located virtual server I use for Kosmo. There I can say I've been using Linux before Brent for quite some time (at least 4 years!!!). Although I really don't touch that machine as it just relays Kosmo mail to an MS Exchange server and serves up the simple Kosmo website which is in the extreme state of requiring an overhaul/update (its got to be over 4-5 years old and doesn't apply whatsoever anymore). I'm such a savvy marketer!!

The NT boxes are going to handle all services for a while and I can't see myself moving these over to Linux anytime soon. Most of them are used for development, testing and internal projects all requiring the horsepower (business applications) I don't see available with Linux just yet. For example, projects I'm working on are going to require SQL Server or some other proper DBMS period. I wouldn't dare think of using MySQL in its place. However, I can see other projects utilizing MySQL so its time to familiarize with some of these alternatives. Now that I think of it I could have used MySQL a few years ago when I put together a web app for a cell phone reseller. Not being familiar with Linux back then I just created my own database implementation using some neat Perl tricks. I'm not even sure MySQL existed back then.

Well time to grab some sleep to be able to get up tomorrow at a decent time and mess around with Linux a bit.

Dave writes: InfoWorld: "During his keynote at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week, Microsoft's Bill Gates will demonstrate the AirPanel 150, a flat-panel wireless monitor from Viewsonic that allows users to carry it from room to room."  [Scripting News]

Now I've been waiting for the Tablet PC for a while now and it definitely has its uses. But this device can also be very useful and would replace the laptop I have that floats around the house from room to room. It normally is used as a jukebox connected to the stereo and also as a thin-client running VNC connected to a number of desktops/servers up in the office. I can definitely see something like this AirPanel 150. Then again, they will probably be way overpriced so I'll most likely end up going with a solution with a cheap laptop and wireless card costing no more than a couple hundred bucks.
